Three Elements of Aware parenting
Founded by developmental psychologist Aletha Solter, PhD, and enriched by the contributions of Marion Rose, PhD
Meeting Attachment Needs
Emphasising physical closeness, connection and bonding, with sensitive attunement, prompt responses to crying and full-term breastfeeding.
Non Punitive Discipline
Not using punishments, coercion, bribes, or rewards. Responding to our children's full range of underlying feelings and needs before their behaviour.
Helping Our Children Heal
By responding with compassionate connection as our children fully express their feelings through crying, raging (tantrums), and laughter to release accumulated stress and tensions..
What is Aware Parenting?
Aware Parenting enables us to raise our children with profound compassion and empathy. It emphasises lovingly listening to our children, allowing them to express their emotions freely, and nurturing a deeper awareness and connection in our own lives and those of our children. The foundational practices help create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters love and growth for ourselves and our children. Children raised with Aware Parenting are known to be naturally cooperative, compassionate, competent, and non-violent and are more connected to their authentic selves.
Many parents who discover this transformative parenting paradigm find that they are already practising a gentle, nurturing, and attachment-informed approach. Aware Parenting is similar to attachment style parenting but it differs significantly in two ways. One is listening for a mothers feelings and meeting her needs, a vital component for an optimal mother-baby relationship. And the other, crying in arms, welcoming our children's full range of emotions, and releasing accumulated stress and tensions.
By trusting our own inner wisdom, we can understand that our child was born with an innate sense of what they need to grow and thrive. We embrace their individual timing, interests, and uniqueness, while encouraging them to remain true to themselves. Ultimately, nurturing authenticity in our children can empower them to live fulfilling and purposeful lives.
When we actively listen to our child's full range of emotions through crying in arms and facilitate healing and connection through play, we are building a foundation of love and support that will last a lifetime.
I feel immense joy, as I stand in full embodied knowing that Aware Parenting is a valuable and compassionate resource for families worldwide. It offers practical and tangible support for the whole family, inviting a more conscious, loving, and connected relationship with ourselves and our children.
